James William Denver papers collection, 1850-1890.

This collection is composed primarily of James William Denver's correspondence (1856 through 1890). As he was Commissioner of Indian Affairs, Territorial Governor, and an Army Officer, the collection covers a wide range of topics. These pertain to his positions, and his activities in both Territorial (Bleeding), as well as, Civil War Kansas. Also included are letters from his wife, as well as his overland trip to California journal (1850).

James W. Denver was born near Winchester, Virginia. He attended public schools and moved to Ohio with his parents in 1830, settling near Wilmington. In 1841 he taught school in Missouri, and in 1844 he graduated from the law school of the University of Cincinnati. He was admitted to the bar and practiced law near Xenia, Ohio.
